My own personal thoughts.
I have always been a very happy Canon 1D Mk3 owner since it's first release and never seemed to have any of the problems that some owners reported with the auto focus system. My only gripe with it as time went on was the the 10 mega pixel files were not really sufficient to produce the image size required by certain Stock Photography Libraries. So in the interim I purchased the Canon 5D Mk2 at 21 mega pixels which gave me the file size I wanted but was very disappointing in other areas where the 1D's excel.
Eventually Canon released the Mk 4 and after time the prices came down to a more realistic level and with a trip to Australia imminent I decided to buy one. I was, in a way, interested to see if the super new auto focus system had been improved considerably and that my Mk 3 had in fact been inferior in some way without me realizing. But no, there was no improvement whatsoever in focus tracking. On the other hand the larger file size, improved focus points and one or two other changes to the camera made the purchase well worth it and as you may well know I came back from Australia with the best set of images from any photography trip that I have been on to date.
All in all I find this is an absolutely wonderful camera to use, as is my 1D Mk 3. Now my 5D has almost become redundant because 98% of my photography is of wildlife and the 1D is 'Number One' by far for wildlife photography in my book.
